Singersongwriter Nathaniel Rateliff, who hails from a tiny town in Missouri, makes his official solo debut with In Memory of Loss. He started out as part of a band called Born in the Flood before cutting Desire and Dissolving Men, an album of homemade recordings, under the name the Wheel on Denver-based micro-indie Public Service Records. Nevertheless, Rateliff's Rounder debut marks the first time he has recorded strictly under his own name. Songs in album Nathaniel Rateliff - In Memory Of Loss 2010. It all seems so mournful and woebegone, one starts to suspect that In Memory of Loss is a darkly comic concept album about the futility of existence. Opener Once in a Great While sets the tone with Rateliffs almost crooning vocals, smudges of strings and sprinkles of piano. On Early Spring Till he harmonises with himself like a one-man Everly Brothers. Released to very little fanfare last year, In Memory of Loss travelled by word of mouth from one discerning music lover to the next. Now given the major-label heave-ho it deserves, this is an album that will sound as perfect in 10 years' time as it does now. Comparisons to Bon Iver, Lambchop and Leonard Cohen tell only one part of the story. It's better than you can imagine. Hell, it's probably the best album of its kind that you will hear all year.
