Kaleidoscope suffers from an identity crisis of sorts - the album splits arranging duties between James Mack who contributes lush, symphonic backings and Phil Wright who favors a stripped-down, soulful approach, and while their contrasting sensibilities guarantee the album never coheres as a complete listening experience, it boasts several flashes of brilliance that supersede its flaws. Bloodfire
Like most of these Nancy Wilson albums from this era, this has its moments, but even those aren't essential. Sure, a weaker offering from Nancy might be better than weaker offerings from most artists, but this is another set for diehard fans or for folks with the time to find her finer moments on her many albums. She does an interesting reading of "Bojangles" and the Bill Withers is enjoyable, but this was a time for the new soul artists and Capitol likely wasn't trying to return her to diva status, and both she and the label were likely happy with giving something for fans of her easy-listening style while trying to adding cuts to fit the times.
