Mutation began as the deformed brainchild of Ginger Wildheart, one of British rock's official living legends and the man behind The Wildhearts, Hey Hello and all manner of wildly tuneful and uplifting rock'n'roll shenanigans. This band is different, however. This band is the manifestation of all the horrible stuff that goes on in Ginger's head. As a result, the first two Mutation albums were laborious in their creation but mind-blowing to all those who heard the: 2013's 'The Frankenstein Effect' was like a Wildhearts alb. A review of Mutation III: Dark Black by Mutation, available June 23rd in Europe and July 7th in North America via Undergroove Records. The issue is that while the album is melodic enough to undermine the veneer of vitriol its not melodic enough to become truly memorable and catchy. These two aspects counteract each other and leave a record which confuses me as to intention and execution. While mildly satisfactory on a momentary basis for both brutality and melody Im not compelled to hit replay once finished with my reviewing duties. Acid test: how do I feel now that Im returning to III two weeks after first sitting down with it .
