I really enjoy this release. A lot of energy and Muddy's vocals really shine! I don't have a 1st press but likely the best you will hear of this album. Thanks Mr. Gray!

For the most part it sounds really good. But it sounds like the original masters may have suffered tape deterioration because some songs like "I just want to make love to you" and "rolling stone" have pretty bad distortions with highs being overblown and the later having a lite tape hiss in the background throughout the track. Actually "rolling stone" is almost unlistenable, there's real bad distortion and static on a lot of the guitar parts. Anyone else have that issue? It's odd, because the next track fires up perfectly fine, crystal clear. But for some reason "rolling stone" is just wretched and that's a shame cuz it's one of my favorite cuts. It's really just those two tracks that have problems. The rest of the record is is quiet and has nice warmth. Muddy's voice really stands out which is a plus, but the range with some of the high notes he hits doesn't translate well at times. But for the most part I think it's a decent listening experience. 7/10.

The sources of a couple of the tracks clearly vary from others as you have described. Maybe they were from lacquers. Of course, the recording of Rollin’ Stone dates back nearly 70 years, and Muddy was by no means a Mainstream Recording artist so expectations of recording standards need a little leniency me thinks. I’ll have to compare it with the Japanese CD release UICY-75949 and Geffin 60th Anniversary vinyl re-release GEFLP72325 from November 2017 - the latter not listed on the Discogs database at the time of writing. There are many more extensive Muddy Compilations. However, the eccentric in me likes to hear these original track listings like the fledgling Rolling Stones played in their shared flat in Edith Grove in Chelsea London back in the early-60s.... and it surely packs a wallop in mono. Especially listen to the acoustic bass, harmonica and Muddy’s more youthful vocals than the still admirable Johnny Winter mid-1970s re-recordings. Sublime!!
