Presented in chronological order, these brilliant tracks from Davis' five years with Prestige Records thrillingly document his growth as both soloist and bandleader. It's fascinating and delightful to hear how the master trumpeter progresses from the angular, speedy post-bop of Morpheus and the blithely hip Four to the bluesy strut of Walkin', arguably the birth of hard bop. And check his liquid tone on the aching There Is No Greater Love and his almost sinister, noir-ish first recording of Thelonious Monk's 'Round. Milestones CL 1193 is a studio album by American jazz trumpeter and composer Miles Davis, recorded with his first great quintet augmented as a sextet. It was released in 1958 by Columbia Records. Tenor saxophonist John Coltrane's return to Davis' group in 1958 coincided with the modal phase albums: Milestones and Kind of Blue 1959 are both considered essential examples of 1950s modern jazz. Davis at this point was experimenting with modes scale patterns other than major and minor. The word definitive here is what's in question, simply because it is so utterly subjective that virtually any hardcore Davis aficionado might have picked no less than half-a-dozen cuts that are different from what appears here, and be no less correct.
