Scored for winds and percussion, the piece is constructed in several slow sections, usually built on single lines of wide intervals played in unison, that present a stark vista of desolation that dominates the work. This funereal work is matched up with two earlier Messiaen pieces, Le tombeau resplendissant 1931 and Hymne 1932, both written for full orchestra, which are much more active and vigorous, in dramatic contrast to the main offering. Offspring of the Societe des Grands Concerts de Lyon, founded in 1905, the Orchestre National de Lyon became a permanent orchestra with 102 musicians in 1969, with Louis Fremaux as its first musical director. Taking over from Louis Fremaux in 1971, Serge Baudo was in charge of the orchestra until 1986 and made it a musical force to be reckoned with far beyond its home region. Jun Märkl was Music Director of the orchestra from 2005 to 2011. Orchestre National de LyonMärkl Naxos. Andrew Clements. Both in the concert hall and on record, Et Exspecto Resurrectionem Mortuorum, Messiaen's 1964 memorial to the dead of two world wars, is heard far more than it used to be and now, apart from the Turangalîla Symphony, it might well be his most often performed orchestral work. The fiercely combative Le Tombeau Resplendissant dates from 1931, though it was never heard again in Messiaen's lifetime after its first performance, while Hymne, composed the following year, had to be reconstructed entirely from memory by the composer in 1946, after the score was lost.
