Mathematics styled Mahematics is the twelfth studio album by singer-songwriter Melissa Manchester, issued in April 1985. The album was Manchester's first studio album since leaving Arista Records, her label for ten years, after her 1983 album Emergency. Signed to MCA Records, the album was a progression of that last album, in that it relied more on a synth-popnew wave sound rather than on her earlier singer-songwriter-styled records. On her sole MCA album, Melissa Manchester gave melody and lyric equal billing with the synth-drums and other contemporary production techniques, rather than simply serving as a singer over dance tracks, as she had on Emergency. But much of Mathematics was still music-making by computer chip, which meant that she needed a hit single to re-start her career, and the title track, her final chart single, wasn't it. The title finds Manchester rapping cleverly to a sythesizerguitarhorn accented dancerocker. Energy and Al Tied Up continue that same flavor with very upbeat,gospel inspired choruses while Shocked has a slower,hollow mid 80's funkpop stomp about it.
