Tequila and Chocolate 10:30 Louder reunites keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood with guitar great John Scofield, who employed the trio on his 1997 A Go Go album. That record opened the creativity gates for both the trio and Scofield, who fed off and goaded each other into territories neither party had previously gone separately. Out Louder isn't so much a rematch as an upgrade. Both Scofield and MMW have continued to explore in the near-decade since A Go Go, and they come to this project with a greater understanding of their collective abilities as well as a willingness to expl. Out Louder is an album produced as a collaboration between Medeski Martin & Wood and John Scofield. It is the first album released under the name Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood, since 1998's A Go Go was released under Scofield's name alone. A Go Go was John's record and we were essentially sidemen, where Out Louder musically comes from all of us explains Wood. All songs by Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood unless noted. Though they started out with a more-or-less straightforward piano-bass-drums jazz setup, the threesome expanded their sound with unusual configurations. The band collaborated further with Scofield again in 2006, releasing the album Out Louder under the name Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood. This was the first album released on MMW's own Indirecto Records. Album 2006 12 Songs. Out Louder. Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood. Jazz first album to be issued on MMW's own Indirecto label, Out Louder is a consistently enjoyable world tour that has just the edge and sense of surprise that has been missing on some of Scofield's and MMW's recent albums. Lloyd Sachs. Go Unlimited. Medeski, Martin & Wood with John Scofield is a nice match. Scofield's 1997 disc, A Go-Go w MM&W, was also wonderful. I've listened to each many times they are foundation pieces of my collection. The Scofiled-led set was more precise like a architect's drawing Out Louder is more messy like a Picasso. Which do you prefer Read more. I got to the Medeski, Martin & Wood party late and left early. Combustication Blue Note, 1998, a funk gumbo masterpiece with a generous side order of knowing jazz references, was and remains a satisfying meal. But neither The Dropper Blue Note, 2000 nor Uninvisible Blue Note, 2002 did it for me: the episodic, cut and paste tunes and generally short track playing times were irritating. But maybe the creator does have a master plan, for somehow Medeski, Scofield, Martin & Wood's Out Louder found its way onto the player-and it's a delight, an arresting, inventive, developmental and groovalicious stew of funk, rock and jazz confusion
