ONE is the debut album by American alternative hip hop group Me Phi Me, released on February 18, 1992 see 1992 in music by RCA Records. Generally considered the first folk-rap album, ONE was a critics darling in the United States, United Kingdom, Europe and Scandinavia, though sales were limited. A fusion of acoustic guitars, spacey synthesizers, and live funk beats, the album established the Me Phi Me Fraternity as one of the more progressive hip-hop artists of all time. Mephi recorded their debut album Morganium ad Aylanium and released it in 2009 by label Midnight Production. Mephi is Sweden solo project made by the only member of band VaRgAfMoRgAnIuM. One, Mi Phi Me's first and only album, established the rapper as a unique figure in hip-hop. Instead of relying on funk, soul, R&B, and rap, Mi Phi Me uses folk and pop as his musical foundation, creating a new-age hip-hop that has more in common with hippies than B-boys. Me Phi Me, a one-man band, occupies roughly the same pop-infused, early '90s alternative rap space as P.M. Dawn, but his music is less dreamily introspective and more oriented toward promoting positive messages. Musically, the album One isn't bad, in fact it's quite well-produced and is full of memorable choruses. It seemed to have everything going for it, fitting the mood of its era almost perfectly. It's just that there really was never much of a market for somewhat narcissistic, good-advice pop songs with acoustic guitar, rapped vocals, and sung choruses - even during the post-Three Feet High and Rising push by major labels to sign acts that would have the crossover (suburban/white/college radio) appeal as De La Soul. Perhaps it was too pretty, too mild a form of rap-based expression for the tastes of the day. The rap style is straightforward and closer to speaking than shouting - about as far from Chuck D. or Ice Cube as you can get. It's an album I never listen to, except when I consider getting rid of it. Then I put it on and end up listening to the whole thing and liking it. Back onto the shelf it goes!
