MAX is an album by American jazz drummer Max Roach featuring tracks recorded in 1958 and released on the Argo label. A decade earlier, Roach had absorbed Kenny Clarke's drumming style and, with trumpet virtuoso Clifford Brown, forged his own brand of bebop. By 1958, on his way to becoming a true jazz elder, Roach began pushing the boundaries of jazz even further. All compositions by Max Roach except as indicated. Clifford Brown & Max Roach is a 1955 album by influential jazz musicians Clifford Brown and Max Roach as part of the Clifford Brown and Max Roach Quintet, described by The New York Times as perhaps the definitive bop group until Mr. Brown's fatal automobile accident in 1956. The album was critically well received and includes several notable tracks, including two that have since read more. The Clifford and Max Roach Quintet consists of: Clifford Brown, trumpet and leader Max Roach, drums Harold Land, tenor saxophone Richie Powell, piano and George Morrow, double bass. Max Roach Plus Four. Max Roach Plus Four finds Roach taking plenty of solo space, including almost all of Dr. Free-Zee and the climaxes of Just One of Those Things and Woody 'n You. The horns have plenty of good spots, and other highlights of this worthy set include George Russell's Ezz-thetic and a warm rendition of Body and Soul.
