This new effort, titled Still Summer, Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Fury, is, in many ways, an equinox for Pond and Hansen as creative partners. Stylistically, the album harkens to Ponds precision in sweetly voiced songwriting that he has laid claim to throughout his prolific career layers of clean acoustics and fuzzy leads, with simply minimal slap-backed percussion, as well as thick, Jeff Mangum-esque field recorded soundscapes that set the scene of standing in a backyard, in the dark, after too much bourbon. The songs themselves swell like late-era Replacements or first-album Big Star. Still Summer by matt pond PA, released 11 August 2017 1. A Spark 2. Street Squirrels 3. The EPs title alone is enough to save an entire generation of hearts. I could gush over each and every song, and I may, but Ive settled on the featuring the title track for now. How do The Lowlifes differ from Matt Pond PA Thats a great question, and one Ive pondered pun intended for the past few weeks. Maybe it was Dr Strangelove that really did persuade us all to stop worrying about the bomb. Perhaps this film inoculated our minds with black comedy, absurdified and ironised the horror and made the unthinkable thinkable. But I can never watch it without a bowel-liquefaction of fear. Somehow this is most acute when Peter Sellers, playing the stiff-upper-lipped RAF officer Lionel Mandrake is curtly informed by his crazy American commanding officer Brigadier General Jack Ripper Sterling Hayden that the nuclear confrontation has begun which is to say, Ripper has pre-emptively begun a war to
