Singer McCaslin Prairie In The Sky slide show - w permission FolkoreMcCaslin McCaslin born December 22, 1946 in Indianapolis is an American folk singer who writes, records and performs contemporary folk music. She has recorded primarily for Philo Records and traveled and performed with her ex-husband, Jim Ringer. Her music ranges from ballads of the old west to her own songs of the new west and modern times. She is regarded as a pioneer of open guitar tunings, and known for her distinctive vocal style. Her influences can be heard in many younger folk performers. In the case of this album one might think this is some kind of new age cowboy drivel, the cover decorated with airbrushed cowgirls, cacti, horses, and pink flowers. It is all very ugly and could very well hide the respectable and sincere music that lies within. The voice of Mary McCaslin is the kind of female folk or country voice that has gotten harder and harder to find since the '70s passed by. I've had Prairie in the Sky for years on vinyl and just picked-up the CD concerned it might fall out of print. This is a classic that could so easily fall through the cracks. Mary McCaslin comes through with such a sincere love of the material and subject matter. While this would probably get tagged as Alternative, it's country music far more honest than most of what we hear on the radio. Mary's voice, clean guitar playing, and well written songs all combine to take the mind to other times and other places. I have loved this album since I first heard it in the mid-1980s. MsCaslin's pure, honest voice and her lovely, reliable arrangements bring out the best in these songs
