Marshall Crenshaw is the debut studio album by American musician Marshall Crenshaw. It was released on April 28, 1982 by Warner Bros. Crenshaw, a performer in the musical Beatlemania, had begun to write songs for the album while staying in New York. The album was recorded with his backing band and producer Richard Gottehrer in a style Crenshaw felt was sterile. Crenshaw himself later expressed a dislike for the album's production, though the album saw critical acclaim and was ranked by Rolling Stone as one of the top 100 albums of the 1980s. His second album, Field Day, was released in June 1983, sported a bigger production courtesy of producer Steve Lillywhite that divided opinion at the time. As a fan of older music, I really enjoyed this album for many reasons. First, in a synthesizer-happy era, Crenshaw said no way and stay to the basics of rock and played it strait - this is why the album holds so well some 25 years later. He was obviously influenced heavily by Buddy Holly which comes out not only in his sound but his looks yet it works. Unfortunatley in this modern era of corporate rock, Crenshaw is lost. Marshall Howard Crenshaw born November 11, 1953 is an American musician, singer, and songwriter best known for his song Someday, Someway, a US Top 40 hit in 1982. His music has roots in classic soul music and Buddy Holly-the latter to whom Crenshaw was often compared in the early days of his career, and whom he portrayed in the 1987 film La Bamba.
