The Victoria and Albert Museum often abbreviated as the V&A in London is the world's largest museum of applied and decorative arts and design, as well as sculpture, housing a permanent collection of over million objects. It was founded in 1852 and named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The V&A is located in the Brompton district of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, in an area that has become known as Albertopolis because of its association with Prince Albert, the Albert. Built in 1857, the Victoria and Albert Museum V&A was first known as the Museum of Manufactures and later the South Kensington Museum before it was officially christened as the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1899. The V&A continues to honour its early commitment to accessibility with free entry to permanent exhibitions, while fostering creativity in London with regular educational talks, tours, courses, family events and workshops. What can you see at the V&A today The tremendous collection of over 4. 5 million objects has grown rapidly since its beginning. The V&A holds the National Collection of Musical Instruments, which was started in 1851 following the Great Exhibition. The instruments were collected as works of art, and among them are examples of early stringed, keyboard and wind instruments. This catalogue should be a useful resource for scholars and for anyone with a serious interest in the history of musical instruments. The pieces are fully documented, with detailed descriptions of makers, techniques and provenance. Read more. Early acquisitions. The first instrument the Museum acquired was a theorbo-lute made by Jacob Heinrich Goldt of Hamburg in 1734 , bought from an unknown source for 8 in 1856, a year before the V&A moved to its present site in South Kensington. The earliest instrument, with a known original history, is a harpsichord made in 1574 by Giovanni Baffo of Venice for the Strozzi, a leading banking family from Florence. Henry Cole, the first director of the V&A, acquired it in 1859 for the remarkably low sum of 6 - 7s . The most important single collection of musical instruments in the V&A was formed by Carl Engel of Hanover 1818-1882. As the world's leading museum of art and design, the V&A enriches people's lives by promoting the practice of design and increasing knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of the designed world. Victoria and Albert Museum, British museum that houses what is generally regarded as the worlds greatest collection of the decorative arts. Pieces include European sculpture, ceramics, furniture, metalwork, jewelry, and textiles from the early medieval period to the present day. This museum largely housed a collection of decorative arts objects that had been displayed at the Crystal Palace, which housed the Great Exhibition of 1851. The items were transferred to the South Kensington Museum and redisplayed in 1857 as part of a government effort to improve taste and knowledge among those concerned with British manufactures
