Prior to 2012, the Dutch producer had just one solo EP to his name: Dry Delivery, which was released on Dutch imprint Black Label in 2004. Then he made a comeback of sorts in 2012, with two appearances on German label Workshop-one full solo EP and a reissue of 2004's Come And Boogie on a split 12-inch. I Am Woman therefore will be his most significant musical offering to date, though at six tracks it's pretty short by album standards. There are two guest appearances, with Fabian and Son Dexte. Thanks to the Workshop, the label, for bringing this incredibly rare guy back into the arena when re-releasing his stand-out track Come and Boogie some weeks ago and just now putting on more fresh stuff of his out on Workshop 16. Still it has to be said, it has been and is until today Marcellis' very own Dry Delivery E.P. which is outspokenly IT. Exceptional in 2004 (and with only Yoav B Bernstein's Boogie Down Saturn on his own Wabi Sabi output likewise as extraordinary as persistent) this five tracker provides us with freakishly edgy grooves and a psychedelic twirl far ahead from the usual business - this being obviously far ahead enough not to re-surface just before recently. Hopefully the world is better prepared for a Marcellis sort of music today... Too sad it would be if we had to wait for another eight years again to hear some news from this guy.
Does by the way anybody know about Black Label Amsterdam? Finally defunct? Their sparse but always extremely charming releases, though never overly consistent in terms of, erhm, quality, were always worth a try.
