Album

The Movie is an in-depth look at Southern rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Released on August 30, 1996, it is part documentary and part concert footage. Charlie Daniels was involved as creative consultant. Most of the footage is from the band's appearance at the Knebworth festival, on August 21, 1976, while the last performance is from a show in Oakland, California. A soundtrack of the film was released by MCA Records, including most of the recordings of the performances from the film. Despite its title, Freebird: The Movie does not contain a series of variations on the title song granted, only four versions of Freebird could have fit on a standard-play compact disc. Instead, it captures a number of highlights from the soundtrack of Freebird: The Movie, a documentary about Lynyrd Skynyrd's final tour. In addition to a dynamite version of Freebird, the album contains a number of rare Skynyrd live cuts, including the first released live takes of What's Your Name and That Smell.
