When Lonnie Liston Smith made the transition from sideman to leader in 1973, it was the beginning of a fusioncrossoverpost-bop band he dubbed Lonnie Liston Smith & the Cosmic Echoes. The acoustic pianistelectric keyboardist, who was born in Richmond, VA, on December 28, 1940, should not be confused with soul-jazzhard bop organist Lonnie Smith. Transformation finds Lonnie Liston Smith continuing to explore the smooth, overtly commercial soul-jazz direction he began in the early '80s. It has a bit more grit and invention than such albums as Magic Lady, yet it doesn't surge forward with the restless searching that distinguished his earlier masterworks. His brother Donald sings on Space Princess and Transformation, but the best moments are tracks like his reworking of A Chance for Peace Give Peace a Chance, which suggest that Smith still has the talent to be a true contender. Although just about any album from the master Lonnie Liston Smith is a must have, this album has too many filler type songs on it. Quiet Moments of course is the center piece of this is not the original version. Smith hasn't diluted his precious Cosmic sound with Transformation, he has only done what the title implies. Xzireo should expand his mind and give Transformation another listen, or check out something less demanding like Yanni. Read more. 2 people found this helpful.
