I play this album as much if not more than some of the early bluesman that I love so much. Little Brother Montgomery delivers on every track, there isn't a single one that I don't want to listen to. I absolutely adore this record and feel lucky to own a copy.

I came across it in the Velouria Records, this sweet store in Visalia,Ca. Anyway, I was home from school on break. It caught my eye as soon as I flipped to it in the new arrivals. Visalia doesn't get many blues albums coming through, by that I mean zero. lol By the cover with that almost ancient looking old photograph of Little Brother sitting at the keys I knew I had to buy it. Plus I'm a big fan of neat logos that make sweet labels. So I loved the Bluebird label when I pulled the records out at home, plus they looked unplayed!

One of the absolute best to every play the piano. He had a combination of blues/ragtime/jazz and many others, to create his own unique style and sound. He has such a great voice too! It's nasally, but I think that's what I like about it, and it makes for a smooth delivery in a sound only he could produce.

To me sides A/B on record 1 contain the best songs. With classics like, Vicksburg Blues, Woman I Love Blues, Mama You Don't Mean Me No Good, Santa Fe Blues, and Leaving Town Blues.

The use of guest appearances on some of tracks throughout the album really showcase the many different styles Montgomery was capable of playing. Some tracks feature guitar, with one track in particular being a personal favorite of mine. (Side C, Tr3 "Monkey Joe Got the Blues") I hadn't heard of him before getting this record, and I recommend checking out Monkey Joe's solo stuff too, it's really good. He's got a great voice!

This is an amazing collection of Montgomery's early recordings and I highly recommend this for every collection. It's one that you'll keep coming back for over and over again. It's always fresh and puts you in the mood you were looking for, every time.

Please try to share this music with anyone you think will appreciate and benefit from having Little Brother Montgomery's music grace their ears.

Note: My pressing sounds great! There are the usual hisses and crackle pops throughout, which is to be expected from anything coming from that era. Old 78's don't bother me at all. His recordings seem to be of higher quality. The instruments and voices are clear and full. Just wish the vinyl was thicker, I'm going to wear this copy out. I'll probably add a couple backup copies just to be safe. The gatefold is thick and sturdy, made to last. ????
