He was an amazing pianist, but never a grandstander. In this set of recordings from the 1950s the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Listening to the four CDs gives a sense of the ability and artistry of the young Pennario. Piecewise, you can find better recordings of many of these works. The first CD is devoted to Chopin. Buffalo-born pianist Pennario is most closely associated with Los Angeles, where he served as the in-house classical pianist at Capitol Records. As a result, Pennario's recordings of standard-issue Romantic music, such as his Schumann and Chopin, may not impress one as immediately or as deeply as the other offerings.
