Album

1619 Broadway: The Brill Building Project is a 2012 album by Kurt Elling, recorded as a tribute to the songwriters of the Brill Building in New York City. At the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, Elling was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album for his performance on this album, losing to Radio Music Society by Esperanza Spalding. Kurt Elling and Laurence Hobgood arranged tracks 1 and 8-11, track 2 together with John Mc Lean, track 5 with Clark Sommers. Laurence Hobgood provided. Some of the tunes on 1619 Broadway The Brill Building Project were actually written years after their composers had left the Brill entirely. For example, Elling explains, Carole King, like many other signatories to The Brill Sound, never had an actual office at the Brill. Forward-thinking jazz vocalist Kurt Elling follows up his progressive 2011 covers album The Gate with his equally ambitious 2012 release, 1619 Broadway: The Brill Building Project. Where on his last outing, Elling drew upon an array of musical genres and time periods for his song choices, this time he focuses on the fertile pop songwriting Mecca that was the Brill Building in the '50s and '60s. This albums title refers to the address of the Brill Building, New Yorks famed songwriting factory. Kurt Elling sets out to cover several obvious selections from its resident writers in the heyday of popular song, alongside a handful of less-predictable ditties. Elling time-warps these tunes into a different era of jazz fusion perhaps the 1980s, the band often employing the amplified versions of guitars, bass and keyboards. Elling concentrates on the poppier 1960s era of the Brill. Leiber and Stollers On Broadway opens with verbal rejection notices for the aspiring songbird. Several tracks feature similar interjections of dialogue, establishing an aura of radio broadcast drama.
