Nothing Lasts Forever 'Nothing' is Kode9's first solo album and is about nothing. The album throws horror soundtracks, sampled library and j-pop records into a no mans land between grime, early dubstep and Chicago footwork. Mostly instrumental, it zigzags between hypnotic, downcast loops, growling drones, jagged cut-ups of androids gone haywire, threaded through twitchy, transatlantic rhythms and sub-bass inaudible through your laptop speakers. Fully crafted in the wake of his music partner Spaceape's death, there are moments of memory and beauty woven into this varied, unique album. Kode9 delivers a very sad, very compelling stare into the void with Nothing. Considering how much of an impact DJ, producer, and Hyperdub founder Kode9 has had on the underground dance music landscape since the mid-2000s, it's quite astonishing that Nothing is somehow his proper full-length debut as a solo artist. Of course, it might be his first solo album by default, as it's the first work he's produced since the untimely 2014 death of his frequent collaborator the Spaceape, whom he recorded two full-lengths and numerous EPssingles with. Though Steve Goodman has released two collaborative albums-both with The Spaceape, real name Stephen Samuel Gordon, who died in 2014-Nothing is his first solo LP.
