The Heart of the Kisses' debut album, The Heart of the Nightlife, Jesse Kivel and Zinzi Edmundson craft a warm and inviting sound that gently swerves between the soundtrack for a night alone under headphones or music perfect for an indie-friendly club night. Kivel, who also fronts the band Princeton, is the vocalist and multi-instrumentalist of the duo his conversational lyrics and slightly charmingly off-key vocals call to mind Jens Lekman. In fact, a fair amount of the songs on the album are reminiscent of Lekman's more upbeat songs - not to a distracting extent its just a good reference p. As some of the other reviewers stated an album that is - blissful, dancy, electro pop that gets the heart and legs moving. But in between that, the album can chill you out and let you enjoy its music under an umbrella at the beach or by the pool. Super catchy and the lead singer has a very unique and great sounding voice to accompany the beats. The Heart of the Nightlifes aesthetic backdrop is Miami, circa 1982 its a soundtrack to the idea of the time, the emptiness of those cavernous white Hollywood Hills mansions, rather than mimicking the sounds of the period itself. Pastel slacks and gaudy cocktails by the pool arent yet trashy Hall & Oates are topping the charts. Thankfully though, The Heart of the Nightlife isnt pure pastiche though it occasionally borders on it. Jesses voice sounds uncannily like that of Swedish crooner Jens Lekman, but lacking the accented curiosity and wryness that make Jens such an attractive
