Sprained Ankle is the debut album of American singer-songwriter Julien Baker. Originally self-released on Bandcamp as an EP, the album was re-released in October 2015 on 6131 Records. The songs on Sprained Ankle were written by Baker when she was a student at MTSU. She thought that they didn't fit the vibe of Forrister and didn't intend to release them as an album while writing. Her friend, Michael Hegner, had free time at MTSU's studio and offered to record her songs. They made a demo, Hegner liked. Sprained Ankle by Julien Baker, released 23 October 2015 1. Blacktop 2. Carlos Parlos cp49 Julien's voice, emotion, lyrics and playing on this album simply gut me in a good way. If I'm not listening to metal or synth pop chances are I'm listening to sad poetic young women play sad literate songs that I can't get out of my head and Baker does it close to the best. Sprained Ankle' is the debut studio album of American singer-songwriter Julien Baker. Originally self-released on Bandcamp as an EP in the winter of 2014, it was re-released on October 23, 2015 through 6131 Records attracting widespread critical acclaim. It was considered by some publications to be among the best albums of 2015. Sprained Ankle is a solo, singer-songwriter album, but very little of it would be considered folky. Julien Baker's extremely intimate songs operate in existential ultimatums-life or death, hope or despair, oblivion or epiphany. These are redemption songs that sound as raw as they feel. Album 2015 9 Songs. Sprained Ankle Julien Baker. Written while she was a student at Middle Tennessee State University, Sprained Ankle is the intensely intimate solo debut of Memphis' Julien Baker. It's made of sparse guitar and piano tunes about breakups, substance abuse, loneliness, physical and emotional pain, and enduring, all with a wounded vocal delivery that reveres the subject matter. Released while Baker was still a teenager, Sprained Ankle was recorded at Matthew E. White's Spacebomb Studios in Richmond, Virginia but hits like a bedroom recording - one that haunts. Instead of beefing up her honest tunes with rich layering like Natalie Prass or Matthew E. White, Baker pares her songs down to their simplest possible format: alone, singing and playing acoustic guitar directly into the microphone, sometimes in a single take. That decision resulted in a remarkable record, one full of beautiful, personal explorations revealed in stark intimacy. Sincere uncertainty, isolated worry, and soft wonder drive much of the album, but when she pushes the edges, she flies past them majestically
