Bach: Secular Cantatas, Vol. The only true Bach work is the first one, Lass, Fürstin, lass noch einen Strahl, BWV 198, known as the Trauerode or Mourning Ode. The cantata Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden, BWV 1083, is a true Bach oddity, a transcription and German retexting of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, made for unknown reasons late in Bach's life. Trauerode, BWV 198, J. Bach 1685-1750 SOLOISTS: Dominique McCormick, soprano Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen, countertenor Tony Boutté, tenor Mark Collegium Japan BCJ is composed of an orchestra and a chorus specializing in Baroque music, playing on period instruments. It was founded in 1990 by Masaaki Suzuki with the purpose of introducing Japanese audiences to European Baroque music. Suzuki still remains its music director. Compared to BWV 198, the circumstances surrounding Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden, BWV 1083, are far more uncertain: why Bach at a late stage in his life around 1746 decided to make an arrangement of Pergolesi's famous Stabat mater isn't known. In the case of the Pergolesi arrangement, the text is religious a German paraphrase of the penitential Psalm 51 replaces the medieval sequence about Mary mourning Christ at the cross but the work doesn't seem to have had any liturgical purpose.
