Album

Travelogue is a 2002 double album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell featuring orchestral re-recordings of songs from throughout her career. It is her 18th studio album and is the follow-up to 2000's Both Sides Now which had a similar format. Upon release Mitchell announced that it would be her last album, but later revealed work on a new studio album. Travelogue - Joni Mitchell. According to Joni Mitchell, Travelogue is her final recorded work, and if that is so, it's a detailed exploration of moments in a career that is as dazzling as it is literally uncompromising. Over 22 tracks and two CDs and as stunning package featuring a plethora of photographs of Mitchell's paintings, Travelogue is a textured and poetic reminiscence, not a reappraisal, of her work - most of it from the 1970s through the 1990s. A 70-piece orchestra, as well as jazz legends Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, and Kenny Wheeler, drummer Brian Blade, bassist Chuck Berghofer, producer Larr. Joni Mitchell - Be Cool Album:Travelogue 2002 Be Cool is also on the Joni Mitchell album Wild Things Run Fast1982. Travelogue finds the incomparable Joni Mitchell sticking to the orchestral format that worked so well on her 2000 album, Both Sides Now, where she took a series of American standards, hitched them up to a 70-piece orchestra, and gave them her own quirky twist. With Travelogue, however, she has applied that technique to her own back catalog. Recorded in London's Air Studios with an orchestra, 20-voice choir, and key players such as Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, this double CD offers moving reinterpretations of her most significant songs. Maybe artists should not attempt to revisit past glories, however this principle does not always hold true as witnessed by the wonderful later reinterpretations of previous material by bluesmen such as Mississippi John Hurt. It's in this spirit that one should approach this release; Mitchell's new takes on old songs work in the same way, her almost world weary tone adding new textures and meanings to old favourites. The approach pays off well in songs from all periods; new arrangements highlighting new meanings in older selections while also drawing attention to choices from later (unjustifiably) neglected albums.
