Fourth World, Vol. 1: Possible Musics is an album by Jon Hassell and Brian Eno. Fourth world music is a musical aesthetic described by Hassell as a unified primitivefuturistic sound combining features of world ethnic styles with advanced electronic techniques. The rest of the album, including the African hand drummers on the hypnotic Delta Rain Dream and the swirling, almost speech-like solos of Griot, is pure Hassell. The composer, improviser, and trumpet player Jon Hassell, now 77, created Fourth World, Vol. 1: Possible Musics in 1980 in collaboration with producer Brian Eno. Melding minimalism, jazz, and ambient sounds, it is eerie, dreamlike, and otherworldly music. The title Fourth World, Vol. 1: Possible Musics has a brainy and academic ring to it, but according to Jon Hassell, the record is at least 50 body music. The basic metaphor is that of the north and south of a person is a projection of the north and south of the globe, the composer, improviser, and trumpet player, now 77, explaine. Joining trumpeter Jon Hassell in different combinations on Possible Musics are coproducer and synthesist Brian Eno and percussionists Nana Vasconcelos and Ayibe Dieng, among others. Hassell has found a unique way to summon a lush, otherworldly sound from his trumpet, applying the Indian vocal techniques he learned from Pandit Pran Nath to the way he plays his instrument. Fourth World Vol 1 where are the others treads a line between jazz, ambent and eastern devotional music, finding its own niche in the course of listening. Definitely more a Hassell album than an Eno album. The collaboration between Jon Hassell and Brian Eno on the 1980 album Possible Nations was an inspired one. Maybe the lesser known of the two, Memphis born Hassell a trumpeter and composer trademarked his playing by feeding the sound through synthesizers and the like. Possible Musics contains six tracks.
