John Edmund Andrew Phillips August 30, 1935 March 18, 2001 was an American singer, guitarist, songwriter, and promoter. He is famous as a member and leader of the vocal group The Mamas & the Papas, his incestuous relationship with his daughter Mackenzie, and for his role in organizing the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. Phillips was born August 30, 1935, in Parris Island, South Carolina. His father, Claude Andrew Phillips, was a retired United States Marine Corps officer. On his way home from France.
