The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death is a 1965 album by American fingerstyle guitarist and composer John Fahey. As with all of Fahey's independently released early albums, it had little critical recognition upon release. The album has grown in stature since its reissue on CD in 1997 and is now highly regarded critically. It was Fahey's fourth album to see. You see, up to this point Fahey had been calling his albums by volume i. e Vol. 1, Blind Joe Death and Vol. 2, Death Chants, Breakdowns, and Military Waltzes . But this was his first album with the label Riverside. So instead he left it as The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death without the Volume. His Vol. 4 wound be his next album, 1966s Guitar Vol. 4, The Great San Bernardino Birthday Party And Other Excursions. This album is commonly known now as Vol. 5 because whilst the album was released in 1965, it was pressed into a limited 50 copies and wasnt until 1967, after the Vol. Released in 1965. This album, originally released on Riverboat Records and later reissued by Fahey's own Takoma label, has a lot of rough edges in terms of the recording but a tremendous amount of power when it comes to the music. Fahey was at the top of his game, alternately playful and dark, so there's never a dull moment. There is always something new to be heard on each playing.
