John Campbell. Howlin' Mercy was the last of two recordings for Elektra, and is by far the heavier of the two. As displayed by its opening track, Ain't Afraid of Midnight, Campbell was a considerable slide guitarist who owed his skill to the bluesmen like Lightnin' Hopkins from his home state of Texas, Fred McDowell, and a few others. Not as dark and full of voodoo themes as I expected, but a powerful guitar player with a deep and brooding voice that is a welcome addition to the Nawlins wing of my blues library. I would not compare his voice to Howlin' Wolf but more to Omar Dykes & the Howlers, and the guitar playing on a couple of tunes also was reminiscent of that band. John Allen Campbell January 20, 1952 June 13, 1993 was an American blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Campbell was born and grew up in Shreveport, Louisiana, United States. His first group was the Texas-based electric power trio, Junction. Formed in 1973 in Corpus Christi, Texas, the band consisted of John on guitar and vocals, Tim Delaney on bass and vocals, and Jack Satch Haupt on drums and vocals. The trio disbanded two years later. Campbell cut his first album titled Street Suite
