Blues for Fred is an album by jazz guitarist Joe Pass that was released in 1988. It was recorded as a tribute to singer and dancer Fred Astaire, who died the previous year. After many albums produced by Norman Granz who sold Pablo to Fantasy Records in 1987, this is Pass's first album with producer Eric Miller. His versions of Cheek. Joe Pass recorded at least a dozen sets of unaccompanied guitar for the Pablo label, and although one can have a very viable jazz collection without owning all of them, none of them are throwaways. This fairly late effort finds Pass paying tribute to the magic of Fred Astaire on his Blues for Fred which is played in a medley with They All Laughed and a variety of top standards from the 1930s. As usual, Pass interprets the music with taste, solid swing, and constant creativity within the bop tradition. Blues For Fred. Joe Pass - Blues For Fred 1988. To favorites 2 Download album. This one is my favorite by far. Maybe it's because I'm an old man that has played guitar for around fifty years, or maybe it's because the songs are from my era, but this is fantastic Jazz guitar palyed in memory of the great Fred Astaire. When listeng to this you can almost see Fred dancing. Pass is the smoothest guitarist that ever lived in my view. His runs have fantastic speed and duration and they never ever falter
