Laughter & Lust is a 1991 album by Joe Jackson. He left A&M Records in 1990, which soon released Steppin' Out: The Very Best of Joe Jackson, which became a Top Ten hit in the UK. Jackson subsequently signed a recording contract with Virgin Records. Music journalist Martin C. Strong states Laughter & Lust was Jackson's most direct, accessible material in years, a welcome diversion from his constant experimentation. All songs written and arranged by Joe Jackson, except where noted. Joe Jackson. After the inappropriately bombastic arena rock of Blaze of Glory, Joe Jackson returned somewhat to his roots to deliver the most straightforward pop album in his career in Laughter & Lust. While Jackson's late-'80s output is composed of intelligent, if often forgettable, adult poprock, Laughter & Lust feels almost like a snotty declaration of Jackson's pop skills. Obvious Song did well on modern rock radio, but this became Jackson's first pop album not to crack the Top 100.
