Static Prevails is the second studio album by American rock band Jimmy Eat World, released on July 23, 1996 on Capitol Records. Produced by Wes Kidd, Mark Trombino and the band itself, the album is the first to feature bass guitarist Rick Burch and the first to have been produced by Trombino. The album marks the band's major label debut. Unlike the previous album, which was sung mainly by Linton or all subsequent records, sung predominantly by Adkins, Static Prevails splits lead vocals almost fairly. Maybe it's all three, but what Static Prevails essentially lacks is the songwriting maturity that Jimmy Eat World could have perfected but it's almost as if the studio heads at Capitol wouldn't let them so that there would be more room for radio-friendly pop songs. In the end, nobody won. However, tracks such as Anderson Mesa, Call It in the Air, and Seventeen don't cross that line of boring alternative rock but remain in that aggressive pop status. Unlike their debut album in which Tom Linton bore the brunt of lead vocals, Static Prevails boasts an even mix between Tom and Jim Adkins taking the lead. The band has stopped playing songs from this record at concerts, as they believe that the end product was more a reflection of what Capital Records wanted and not how the band wanted to sound.
