The New York Rock Festival, The Singer Bowl - 8/23/68
The Jimi Hendrix Concerts is a posthumous live album by Jimi Hendrix, released in 1982. The album contains eleven songs from six different concerts between 1968 and 1970. The album spent eleven weeks in the UK Albums Chart, peaking at number 16. In the U. it was less successful, reaching number 79 in the Billboard 200. The 1989 re-release of the album on CD included a previously unreleased 12th track, Foxey Lady. All tracks are written by Jimi Hendrix, except where noted. Jimi Hendrix was at a musical crossroads when he played the Atlanta Pop Festival on July 4, 1970. With bandmates Mitch Mitchell drums and Billy Cox bass in tow, he turned in a fiery 16-song set that mixed reliable crowd-pleasers such as Purple Haze and Foxey Lady with less-flashy, socially conscious material like Message to Love and Straight Ahead, which wouldnt see official release until after his death less than three months later. While Hendrix could easily have phoned it in on the oldies and still thrilled the crowd, he didnt, preferring to add different, darker texture. Last American Concert. The revolutionary impact Jimi Hendrix, Billy Cox and Buddy Miles had upon the boundaries and definitions of rock, R&B, and funk can be traced to four concerts over the course of two captivating evenings. These performances were first celebrated by Band of Gypsys, which featured six songs from the two January 1, 1970 concerts, including Machine Gun, the albums dramatic centerpiece. By the time Jimi Hendrix arrived onstage at the Woodstock Festival on the morning of August 18, 1969, the crowd of nearly 500,000 people had dwindled to fewer than 40,000. Much of Max Yasgur's farm looked desolate. Litter was strewn everywhere and - hard as it may be to imagine - scores of people were streaming out as Hendrix played. The festival was billed as 3 Days of Peace & Music, but rain and other problems delayed Hendrix's festival-closing performance until 8:30 on the morning of the fourth day, a Monday.
