They're not overlong and they have some winning phrases. Many's the time, though, that I felt the music about to soar, only for it to remain earthbound, so to speak. I suppose I wished for more counterpoint, more going on in general. Composer Jeremy Beck is touted, in an unattributed quote, as Exhibit A in classical music's defense against the charge of being out of touch. There was a time when, indeed, the dictum of We don't care if you listen was something of a standard at the conservatory level. As time went on, however, composers found that such an attitude was as restrictive to the forward development of their musical efforts as it was daunting for the audiences who had to endure the results. Jeremy Beck is an American composer who knows the importance of embracing the past while also going his own way. The critic Mark Sebastian Jordan has said that Beck was committed to tonality and a recognizable musical vernacular long before that became the hip bandwagon it is today. Indeed, . an original voice celebrating music. Jeremy Joseph Beck was born January 15, 1960, in Painesville, Ohio. His father, Albert William Beck b. April 4, 1931, in Scranton, Pennsylvania d. Sonata No. 3 Moon, for violoncello & piano Work. Recorded 2003. Emilio Colón Cello, Heather Coltman Piano. da Capo. By Jeremy BeckEmilio Colon & Heather Coltman. Cello Sonata No. 3: II. Beck grew up playing the cello in Quincy, Illinois and later went on to study at the Mannes College of Music, Duke University and Yale School of Music. His teachers have included Lukas Foss, Jacob Druckman, Stephen Jaffe and David Loeb. He is presently based in Louisville, Kentucky. On the evidence of these three compositions, Becks music is very well crafted, in an idiom which has much in common with the twentieth century mainstream of American music as found in the work of figures such as Barber or Roy Harris or, in some respects, Bernstein
