Jay and the Americans are an American rock group popular in the 1960s. Their initial line-up consisted of John Jay Traynor, Howard Kane née Kirschenbaum, Kenny Vance née Rosenberg and Sandy Deanne née Yaguda, though their greatest success on the charts came after Traynor had been replaced as lead singer by Jay Black. They were discovered while performing in student venues at New York University in the late 1950s. They auditioned for Leiber and Stoller, who gave the group its name. Cara Mia: The Best of Jay Black features latter-day stereo re-recordings of some songs Jay Black became famous during his career as the frontman for Jay & The Americans, and Cara Mia filled out with typically grandiose Black takes on classics like Roy Orbison's Crying. It features the title track, Come a Little Bit Closer, This Magic Moment, and Let's Lock the Door , the latter being the standout since it retains most of the original version's vim and vigor.
