Whiplash is the seventh studio album by English alternative rock band James. It contains the UK top ten hit She's a Star, which re-established the group commercially. Two further singles were released from the album-Tomorrow and Waltzing Along-both of which reached the top 30. The sessions for the album were long and stretched over a period of more than two years with many unreleased songs being recorded-Brian Eno produced many of the early sessions and details some of these songs and the. Whiplash, James' seventh album in several busy but broken years, still resounds with ambient Eno aesthetics, where even signature silences mark time in terms of sound. Old hand at synthetic pop and psonicadelia, Stephen Hague keeps the Eno wave alive with spacy zen minutes on the synth in Watering Hole, as well as strange house dance gyrations on Greenpeace, a happy, creaky piece. It's argued that Tim Booth sounds too much like Al Stewart but 1 Al Stewart sounds great, so and, 2 no he doesn't really, but the energy-factor point is well taken. Whiplash - James. This album from James is my third I have listened to Laid from 1993 and Pleased to meet you from 2001 earlier. Whiplash was released in between, in 1997, and it's an album that doesn't differ that much from the other two. Still the songs are new ideas and not repetitions from earlier. So I think James delivers the goodies as they use to: it's pop music, but still a little odd and diffrent from main stream, with good vocals and arrangements
