The James Madison University Jazz Ensemble was founded in 1971 and is the premier jazz group in the School of Music at James Madison University. The ensemble has performed at the Kennedy Centers Millennium Stage in Washington, DC, the Montreux International Jazz and Blues Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, and the Virginia Music Educator's Association annual convention. The JMU Jazz Ensemble has been featured with the United States Navy Commodores Jazz Ensemble, the United States Air Force Airmen of Note Jazz Ensemble, and at the East Coast Jazz Festival in Rockville, Maryland. The JMU Jazz Ensemble has a long tradition of excellence and has performed at the Montreux, North Sea, and East Coast Jazz Festivals, VMEA convention, and at the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater. The small groups, coordinated by Chuck Dotas, are student organized coached weekly by a faculty member and participate in a regular gig at Clementine Cafe. This extra curricular group consists of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, percussion, and bass keyboard or string. We study and perform music from the wide genre of jazz- from blues to funk and a little of everything in between. Students will complete a short audition to be accepted into this extra ensemble, as we will be building on a basic level of understanding of music literacy and technique.
