Show all albums by Islands. Islands' Arm's Way isn't a complete disaster, but it flirts with it before ending up as merely a seriously flawed and unenjoyable album. Their debut was a ramshackle mess of kitchen-sink experimentation that worked a treat thanks to the band's endearingly weird arrangements and undeniably catchy songs. Much like an album by front man Nick Thorburn's previous band, the Unicorns, there was humor and devil may care attitude coursing through the grooves. Islands - Arm's Way review: Arm's Way is an adventurous, yet creative journey, from start to finish. Without much prior knowledge of Islands, it was hard to judge if they have progressed from their last album Return To The Sea. Regardless, it is apparent they have built a solid foundation for their next albums. Arm's Way intentions are fantastic, but the moves do not always pull through. Besides an overall length issue, sometimes Islands have too many ideas that create awkward phrasings. It is hard to fault a band that made something so brilliantly sound in the end. Arm's Way ANTI- Records Indie band out of Montreal, Quebec, home of one of the best indie music scenes in Arm's Way, which does away with the musical levity and genre experimentations of Return to the Sea, is much darker and more conventional than its predecessor, and not, unfortunately, to its benefit. Islands' new obsession with darkness does, however, make sense. Islands are at their best when they are weird. And there is plenty of weirdness on Arm's Way- like 11-minute, three-movement album closer, Vertigo If It's a Crime, and its trial-to-gallows plotline- but it's bracketed by much more rock pomp than was expected or probably necessary
