The thalamic reticular nucleus is part of the ventral thalamus that forms a capsule around the thalamus laterally. However, recent evidence from mice and fish question this statement and define it as dorsal thalamic structure. It is separated from the thalamus by the external medullary lamina. Reticular cells are GABAergic, and have discoid dendritic arbors in the plane of the nucleus. Thalamic Reticular Nucleus is variously abbreviated TRN, RTN, NRT, and RT. Thalamic reticular nucleus TRN neurons are extensively modulated by cocaines inhibition of catecholamine reuptake at both the somatic and synaptic levels. Systemic cocaine binge administration in mice enhanced gamma-aminobutyric acid GABA release at the thalamic level that was correlated to abnormally high levels of low-frequency oscillations at cortical electroencephalography. Electrical stimulation of the thalamic reticular nucleus TRN trains of 500-Hz pulses at 5-10 microA evokes focal oscillations of cortical electrical potentials in the gamma frequency band approximately 35-55 Hz. These evoked oscillations are specific to either the somatosensory or auditory cortex and to subregions of the cortical rec. Terri Schiavo's Thalamic Reticular Nucleus Cass, SSided, Ltd, Num. Stimulation of the thalamic reticular nucleus also caused the animals to become drowsy and they were more likely to fall asleep, which suggests that sleep-like activity in small parts of the brain may contribute to drowsiness. Lewis, Voigts et al. s findings identify a brain switch that can influence whether an animal is awake or asleep. Importantly, they show that sleep can be independently controlled in small brain regions, and that the thalamic reticular nucleus contains a map that allows it to induce sleep in just one region, or across the whole brain. The thalamic reticular nucleus TRN is a shell-shaped gamma amino butyric acid GABAergic nucleus, which is uniquely placed between the thalamus and the cortex, because it receives excitatory afferents from both cortical and thalamic neurons and sends inhibitory projections to all nuclei of the dorsal thalamus. Furthermore, high-density electroencephalographic studies have revealed a marked reduction in sleep spindles in schizophrenics. CONCLUSION: On the basis of our current knowledge on the molecular and anatomo-functional properties of the TRN, we suggest that this thalamic GABAergic nucleus may be involved in the neurobiology of schizophrenia
