If, often referred to as If 1, is the eponymous debut album by the English Jazz rock band If. It was released in 1970 on the Island Records label in the UK and Capitol Records in the US. The original artwork and the if logo, which was an award-winning design, were by CCS Advertising Associates. It was re-issued as a CD first in 1995 by an obscure label OSA, then in 1997 by Island and finally in 2006 on Repertoire Records with two bonus tracks and liner notes by UK music critic Chris Welch. If 4 is the fourth album released by the English jazz rock band If. It was first issued in 1972 and the last album to feature the original recording line-up. Capitol Records, the band's U. label, declined to issue this fourth album. Most of the tracks on this album were issued in the U. on Waterfall, in a slightly different form and with a new line-up, by Metromedia Records. If 4 was reissued in CD by Repertoire in 2007. After their more commercial If 3 this mainly live album If 4 follows the more jazz orientated meanderings of their earlier albums, but with a more heavy guitar sound, typified by the first track the amazing ten minute live instrumental Sector 17, a real album highlight. As the band were essentially more at home playing this type of music live this makes sense, but still sounds great in the studio. Unlike the band's first three albums, If 4 was not released in North America, but please see the entry for the album Waterfall for a North American release the same year.
