Album

Songs of the Humpback Whale is a 1970 album produced by bio-acoustician Roger Payne. It publicly demonstrated for the first time the elaborate whale vocalizations of Humpbacks, and became the bestselling environmental album in history, selling over 100,000 copies. By raising awareness of the intelligence and culture of whales the album helped spawn a worldwide Save The Whales movement, leading to the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment 10-year global moratorium on commercial. 40 Ton Humpback Whale Leaps Entirely Out of the Water. When first released in 1970, the various grunts, squeals, rumbles and plaintive cries took the world by storm, and created a worldwide interest in cetacean vocalization and intelligence. In many ways this album opened the door to preservation efforts which have prevented so far the extinction of many seagoing species. It was a revolutionary concept album, then and now. Since 1970 when the first whale recordings were made by Dr. Roger Payne, the haunting beauty and evocative sounds of whale singing have been carefully studied and documented. Something about these initial recordings, recently reissued by Living Music, continues to stand above all other similar efforts. Here are the original whale recordings, complete with digital remastering, preserved in their classic majesty. Humpback whales are known for their magical songs, which travel for great distances through the world's oceans. These sequences of moans, howls, cries, and other noises are quite complex and often continue for hours on end. Scientists are studying these sounds to decipher their meaning. A favorite of whale watchers, they also slap the water with their flukes and pectoral fins, rise nose-first out of the water called spyhopping, and do penducle throws, a behavior unique to this species in which they raise their entire rear torso and tail out of the water, twist, and slam their lower half down onto the ocean surface
