This disc by Jean Martinon and the Orchestre National de l'ORTF brings together Honegger's three most popular works-Pacific 231, Rugby, and Pastorale d'ete-with the rarely heard Une cantate de Noel. All four works underline Honegger's flair for drama and for programmatic music. Personally, I think Leonard Bernstein's version of Pacific 231 is more exciting, but Martinon's version is intelligent and pays close attention to the Bachian textures of the work. The rest of Martinons Honegger program is interpretively more disappointing. The Oratorio de Noël, Op. 12, by Camille Saint-Saëns, also known as his Christmas Oratorio, is a cantata-like work scored for soloists, chorus, organ, strings and harp. While an organist at La Madeleine, Saint-Saëns wrote the Christmas oratorio in less than a fortnight, completing it ten days before its premiere on Christmas 1858. The vocal score of this oratorio was prepared later by the composer and organist Eugene Gigout, a colleague of Saint-Saëns. Maitrise de l'. The choir school of Radio France.
