Sloppy production, personality, and great hooks are on a few things this album has going for it. Though this LP didn't blow my mind, it's thoroughly enjoyable, and highly energetic. On Someday Soon, sometime-frontman Michael Coomer runs us through an exchange in which his friend catches fire and asks for a little help being extinguished. The pleas are ultimately declined for kicks. If Hippies has a flaw, it's only that it overstays its welcome by just a few minutes. By the time highway mood piece Prairie My Heart runs its haunting, three-minute course, it feels like an opportunity is missed to wrap things up. In 2010, Austin, TX was one of the hippest places on earth. Matadors Casual Victim Pile was a fine document of the noisy indie rock scene there, and one of the standout groups on the record was Harlem. Great, lo-fi garage rock record with plenty of heart, sensitivity, and indeed vulgarity to it. A not entirely well-known gem rife with blasting guitars, muddled and distorted bass, and a boyish and idiosyncratic vocal delivery. This record doesn't give a fuck and it wears that fact on its sleeve. But it gives a fuck enough to provide some of the catchiest hooks and slickest and hardest performances you'd ever expect to hear from a garage record. Despite the relatively high price point, picking up this LP is a must.
