Following five years with a number of EPs created for Hemlock Recordings, London-based producer and instrumentalist Guy Andrews gives us his debut full-length, Our Spaces, marking his first release for esteemed independent label Houndstooth. Andrews' previous recordings, a number of singles, were impressive, somewhat emotionally neutral, straightforward electronic tracks that you could simultaneously dance and drink into the night with, and they could also soundtrack a long walk in the city. Our Spaces comes across as a different animal altogether. Listen free to Guy Andrews Our Spaces Higher Waters, All Our Flaws and more. 12 tracks 44:19. Guy Andrews - Our Spaces. Guy Andrews often found himself seeking some form of musical escapism prior to his DJ sets, leading him to one day return home and delete all of his old synth patches. So begun his writing for his debut album Our Spaces, over a period of two years. Ignoring previously used DJ-friendly structures, tempos, and mix downs, Our Spaces breathes a new power and directness, as Guy has re-focused his approach and style. Guy Andrews is one of those artists who is always in a state of flux. Never shy to reinvent himself or to try his hand at new genres, he has produced abrasive levels of bass music for respected labels such as Hotflush, Hemlock Recordings, and now Fabrics killer Houndstooth stable. Our Spaces is as lean, mean and hazardous as all of his previous releases, except that Andrews has the space to explore here, to develop his steely strains of percussion into more daring and explorative rhythms that often verge on the cinematic. Guy Andrews is all about his layered compositions, and you can hear the thickness in the bass rumble through on the opener of OUR SPACES, "Higher Waters," which is offset halfway through by the swelling strings. "All Our Flaws" leans much more heavily on the melody, but introduces some more sustained chords in its break, while "Bereft Of Focus, Bereft Of Will" goes more jittery, before "Spirit Ritual" pauses to gather power. This is much more home-listening techno: a sonic moment that fills the space. "Without Names," for instance, has the cinematic sweep, while the guitar plucks of "In Autumn Arms" hints at post-rock, though recast into a dense thicket of sound. The title track itself is a decaying piece of ambient noise, echoed later in the builds and drops of "Perception." "Decipher" opens with a cleaner sound, but the layers soon engulf it, while the guitar returns on "Paganism." "Terminus" ends the album on a darker note, offering a tidy exit to the spaces Guy Andrews has opened up for us.
