Workingman's Dead is the fourth Grateful Dead studio album. It was recorded in February 1970 and originally released on June 14, 1970. The album and its studio follow-up, American Beauty, were recorded back-to-back using a similar style, eschewing the psychedelic experimentation of previous albums in favor of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter's Americana-styled songcraft. The rear cover was upside down on the original release of the album. The album was recorded at Pacific High Recording Studio, San Francisco and engineered by Alembic. In 1965, five uniquely talented artists from a variety of musical backgrounds came together to form a new kind of band. Guitarist Bob Weir, drummer Bill Kreutzmann and Ron Pigpen McKernan all served stints in various Bay Area rock and R&B outfits Jerry Garcia played guitar and banjo in a jug band and bassist Phil Lesh was a composer of electronic music. This remastering of Workingman's Dead is a gem. Recorded in February of 1970, I think this album should be getting more fanfare on its 40th anniversary If you don't own it or if you think you don't like the Dead, buy this one because it's one of the most quintessentially American albums ever recorded.
