In April, 2007, I sat with Bob Weir in his home studio-perched in the Marin County hills, across the Golden Gate bridge from San Francisco-and talked with the singer-guitarist for more than two hours about ancient history: the brief miracle that was Haight-Ashbury in 1965 and '66, before the Summer of Love, and. Another Grateful Dead box set is comin your way Yes, in the grand tradition of the beloved Fillmore West 1969 and Winterland 1973 boxes, comes Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings, a 9-CD box set that is sure to knock your tie-dyed socks off. At this point, we probably dont need to hype you on the glories of 77 Dead. It was a magical time for the band, which was reinvigorated by a plethora of great new material- Terrapin, Estimated Prophet, Passenger, Fire on the Mountain -and really hitting its stride again following the October 74 to June 76 performing hiatus. Listeners are treated to a trio of consecutive Grateful Dead performances, during one of their unquestionable zeniths as a live combo. The warts 'n' all presentation provides the further intimacy of hearing - in real-time - the crests and ebbs of each individual evening on its own or when sized up beside the other evenings. About Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings. Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings Q&A. There's an uncommon clarity to every aspect of Winterland June 1977: The Complete Recordings. David Fricke's essay captures the essence of the activities, even if he overreaches a bit in his description of the sensation. The photos in the booklet and cigar box graphics are of a band in good health and high spirits no gray hair in an array of hirsute visages. There's not quite the discernible flow here as on the nine Winterland CDs from 1973, but that's because four years later the level of playing is uniformly higher throughout, with the Dead pushing themselves more with successive uninterrupted sequences toward the end of June 8th and 9th. When the Grateful Dead played San Francisco's Winterland Arena for three straight nights in November 1973, they triumphed with home court advantage during one of their most celebrated eras. Recorded November 9, 10, and 11, the trio of epic shows captured on WINTERLAND 1973 are among the finest and most legendary in the band's vast tape vaults, according to Dead archivist David Lemieux. Or in the case of Winterland 1973. The Complete Recordings 3 nights in a row. Many point to the Cornell May 8th, 1977 show, which is in the Library of Congress National Recording Registry. What it comes down to is that the Grateful Dead didnt hesitate to try something on stage that they had never discussed, and their audience respected them all the more for it. Dont get me wrong. Very often these risks didnt exactly pan out. My Bloody Valentine's Loveless stands as an album of at least equal importance to Nirvana's Nevermind. A great deal of its importance is how it offers a gender-bending sonic style that severed the entrenched connections between the electric guitar and masculine phallic power. Joseph Fisher.
