Wake of the Flood is the sixth studio album by rock band the Grateful Dead. Released October 15, 1973, it was the first album on the band's own Grateful Dead Records label. Their first studio album in nearly three years, it was also the first without founding member Ron Pigpen McKernan, who had recently died. His absence and keyboardist Keith Godchaux's penchants for bebop and modal jazz rather than McKernan's tendencies toward the blues and soul music contributed to the band's musical evolution. The Dead's first studio album after the arrival of keyboardist Keith Godchaux shows them making their first moves toward a more sophisticated sound and away from their primal psychedelicfolk beginnings. While tracks like Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo and Row Jimmy still showcase their rootsy early-'70s vibe, the jazz-influenced Eyes of the World and the epic Weather Report Suite show the band embracing a more harmonically and structurally complex approach, adding horns and other additional players to expand the Dead's already-r. Wake of the Flood was the first Dead disc issued entirely under the band's supervision - which also included manufacturing and marketing. Additionally, the personnel had been altered as Ron Pigpen McKernan had passed away. The keyboard responsibilities were now in the capable hands of Keith Godchaux - whose wife Donna Jean Godchaux also provided backing vocals. Wake of The Flood continues the Dead's psychedelic folk-rock, with the team of Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter locking up five of the disc's seven numbers, Keith joins Hunter for Let Me Sing Your Blues Away and Bob Weir delivers the epic Weather Report Suite, one of the loveliest songs the group has ever done. Stella Blue features a passionate yet sad vocal from Garcia, and the chipper Eyes of the World has since become a deserved Dead Classic. Verified Purchase.
