Roger Cuthbert Quilter 1 November 1877 21 September 1953 was an English composer, known particularly for his songs. Quilter was born in Hove, Sussex a commemorative blue plaque is on the house at 4 Brunswick Square. He was a younger son of Sir William Quilter, 1st Baronet, a wealthy noted landowner, politician and art collector. Roger Quilter was educated first in the preparatory school at Farnborough. He then moved to Eton College and later became a fellow-student of Percy Grainger, Cyril Scott. He had a close friendship with Frederick Delius who wrote a biography about him 1923 and wrote in the same year, a serenade to mark the 60th birthday of Delius. As a song composer, Quilter became well established in 1900 when Denham Price gave a performance of his Songs of the Sea at the Crystal Palace in London, and also when tenor Gervase Elwes premiered To Julia in 1905 and Seven Elizabethan Lyrics in 1908. On occasion Quilter would accompany his songs in public performance, and he did record many of them with close friend and colleague Mark Raphael.
