This work was commissioned by the Direction de la Musique and the Groupe de Recherches Musicales of the Institut National de l'Audiovisuel in collaboration with l'Atelier de Création Radiophonique at France Culture.
The acousmatic part of 'A Season in Hell' was produced on 8-track tape in the INA.GRM studios in 1979, with the assistance of Yann Geslin.
The following equipment was used for the electronic treatment:
- 4 and 8 track Studer A 80 stereo tape records
- Schlumberger variable speed tape recorder
- BK and multimetric astronic filters
- Eventide flangert and harmonizer
- AKG reverberator
- the GRM's Francis Coupigny synthesizer
In May 1991 Christophe Germanique made a new mix at the Sonus department of electroacoustics and computer music of the Lyons Conservatory in France.
The original material, reproduced on a real-time support which preserves its sound quality, was treated on an AMS Audiofile numerical montage console ("virtual montage"), an Akai 24-track numerical multiple track tape recorder, an automated Saje ULN 40 input console, and divers numerical reverberators (4800 L Lexicon), and an H 3000 Eventide harmonizer.
