At this point, you come to a new release from rapper Ghostface Killah - many albums into a deservedly acclaimed and at times commercially successful career - for two reasons. First his voice, a national treasure, nasal but leathery and incredulous. On an impressive run of solo albums from 1996 to around 2006, Ghostface Killah had other qualities, too: Gulping-for-air urgency, tongue-twisting stories that hurried so fast they splintered and cracked. Though its title suggests otherwise, The Lost Tapes is not a collection of rare or unreleased cuts, but rather a brand new album meant to evoke early Ghostface albums like 1995s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx. 1996s Ironman, and 2000s Supreme Clientele. Production comes via Big Ghost, and guests include Snoop Dogg, Raekwon, E-40, Big Daddy Kane, Reignwolf, and actor Michael Rapaport, who delivers a predictably fiery intro for the album. among several others.
